Subject: Must See Vietnamese Movie showing this weekend only
Dear Families and friends:
I am writing to ask for your support for a new Vietnamese movie that is showing at Camera 12 (3/23 to 4/05). The movie is called "Journey from the Fall". You can see a trailer of it at: www.journeyfromthefall.com. It chronicles the story of a family trying to escape Vietnam on April 1975. The father stayed behind and was sent to re-education camp. The mother, son, and grandma (played by Kieu Chinh) escaped by boat, plundered by pirates at sea, and then tried to piece their lives back together in Orange County, CA. It accurately captures and conveys what most Vietnamese family went through during that time of upheaval. It is like a journey back in time because most of us have gone through it. It will open our children's eyes about the sacrifices that their grandparents and parents went through to give them a chance to live in a free society.
My husband and I were able to watch a private viewing of this movie a year ago before it was released. Needless to say, I wished that I had brought a whole box of tissue with me because my husbands' sleeves and shirts were wet from my constant crying throughout the whole movie.
I was only 8 years old when our family escaped from Vietnam in 1975 and then resettled in Orange County, CA. I can barely remembered what happened at that time. When I saw the movie, all the images on the screen, the Vietnamese diagloque (with English subtitles), brought those memories into full force. The movie made me remembered and it encouraged me to talk about it with my children. If you have older children (this movie is R rated), I encourage you to bring them with you to watch it so they can understand and feel what their grandparents and parents went through. It will answer their question of "why did we leave Vietnam?". Just us telling them with words is not as powerful as seeing and feeling it through this movie. Bring your parents, aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephew, and have a big cry session together.
If you are free this weekend, I encourage you to go and see it since it is a limited showing. It will begin on Friday, 3/23/07 and ends on Thursday 4/05/07. It will be shown at Camera12 in downtown San Jose ( 201 South Second St, SJ, CA 95113). You can check out the time and showing at www.cameracinemas.com. (see special events).Tickets are $9.50 at the theatre or online.

(the filmmaker doesn't have the budget for a nationwide marketing campaign, so we need to spread it by word of mouth....or email :-)
